 Quidditch Tryouts- OPEN!
« Thread Started on Jul 2, 2007, 4:03pm »

Begins 07.03.2007. Ends 07.17.2007.

All right, so for those of you who wish to join your respective houses Quidditch team, this is exactly the place you should be.

Note- Madam Hooch is the Quidditch Referee, and in character- you may add her into your post if you wish. However, the Staff will be deciding the decisions.

First off, you should know that you will be roleplaying your character as the tryout. In the post, you should at least have your character walking onto the field, mounting their broom, and showing off what skills they possess. You are not roleplaying with the other members, this post is entirely up to you. So that means, no chit chat to the other characters or replying. You get one post per character. Remember- not everyone is perfect, and not everyone is going to score every single goal that they attempt.

Second, make sure you state somewhere in your post, whether out of character or in, which position your character is trying out for.

Third, the captain of your respective house team will be picked based on their post's creativity and grammar/spelling. If your character is picked and you do not want to be captain, then the runner-up will be picked next.

The duties of the captain, will be to hold practices, and notify the other members (either in character or out) of upcoming quidditch games. They will also need to notify the staff of any changes that need to be made to the house roster, and post in House Points when their team wins a game. The Staff reserves the right to take back the captain's title and give it to a more active member.

Games will begin sometime near the end of July. Depending on how many players we have for each team. Schedules will be made up shortly after that.

I have a question! Do cannon characters have to try out or do they already hold whatever position is said in the book?

Canon character's have to try out as well. It is not 100% guaranteed that they will be given the position they have in the book, but it is most likely.

((Well, I take it that this is where I am supposed to post. If not, apologies, but I am going to post anyway))

Dim sunlight hit Ash's face as she emerged onto the playing field. The stadium rose above her, flags at the top of the seating snapping in the gentle wind. It was by far the greatest place she had ever been. Ash strode out to the middle of the field with a school broomstick resting gently on her shoulder. Tonight was the first night of Quidditch tryouts, and she was determined to start things off with a bang.

Even though Ash was Muggle-born and hadn't even heard of Quidditch until a few weeks ago, she was now completely obsessed with the game. When the rest of the Gryffindors were chattering or studying down in the Common Room, Ash could be found with her nose in a book that talked about the sport. Of course, that was assuming she could be found in the Common Room at all. Every spare minute she found, Ash was flying under the watchful eye of Madam Hooch. After weeks of practice, she finally got the hang of it and learned how to keep her stomach from doing flip-flops every time she changed directions or rolled.

Ashley was determined to be a Chaser. It just seemed like the natural place for her. With a basketball, soccer, hockey and lacrosse background, Ash knew she could score goals and get a small ball through a hoop, even if it was from the back of a flying broom. But even if she didn't get Chaser, Ash hoped that she would still be a part of the team somehow. She was addicted to sports and to go without playing even a single one for as long as she had was downright torture. With that in mind, Ash had realized that there was a lot riding on this tryout. If she wasn't good enough... she didn't even want to think about it. Nerves had kicked up two days ago and had refused to let up, causing her to act like a complete klutz and ditz in front of everyone in the school.

Finally, Ash reached the middle of the field. With a nod to Madam Hooch - she wasn't sure if she could talk through the nerves she was suppressing - Ash mounted and rocketed into the air. As her hair flew back, she was caught in the rush of flying and her nerves temporarily subsided. After a few deep breaths, Ash was ready to do what she had come here to do - get on the Gryffindor team.

Madam Hooch threw the Quaffle up and Ash caught it effortlessly. It was about the size of a basketball, so she felt comfortable handling it. Of course, she had only really practiced with it once or twice, and that was when she had 'allegedly' broken into the school set and took the small ball out for a test-run. But her lack of experience didn't hurt her any - at the moment. She just hoped the red ball would fly the way she wanted once it left her hands.

Ash dodged and swerved imaginary opponents and Bludgers, knowing she probably looked like a complete idiot to everyone that happened to be watching. But even that didn't bug her much. The huge golden goalposts were approaching fast... Ash got within striking distance... the Quaffle flew from her hands, heading rapidly for the small hoops....

...and sailed right by them without even being close to going in.

Dang, that didn't fly like I wanted it to she thought to herself as she flew over and grabbed the red ball out of midair. Undaunted, she took off for the other side of the field and tried again. For the second time, goalposts loomed larger as she flew toward them with a speed that was making her broom slightly difficult to control.

But control it she did - even when she was throwing the ball with a slight curve as hard as she could. The not-quite-round shape of the ball added to the curve, and it sailed through the goalpost that Ash had intended - even past the imaginary Keeper she had envisioned. Much better Ash smiled as she retrieved the Quaffle and soared to the other end of the pitch. The rest of the night, she only missed three shots - one that the wind caught unexpectedly, one that was just an off-balance and absolutely horrible throw, and one that accidentally hit a bird, sending feathers flying everywhere.

Finally, Madam Hooch called her back down. With slight reluctance, Ash landed in the center of the playing field. She would have loved to have gone all night, but darkness was quickly approaching. On top of that, it seemed as if she had literally left her nerves on the ground. The second her sneakered feet touched the soft lawn of the field, Ashley more nervous than ever. Did I do enough? Was I good enough to make the team? Was she judging me on my first throw or the one where I hit the bird? Did she see me screw up all those times? Her mind raced with doubts as Ash watched Madam Hooch finish up her notes.

After one last scribble, the Professor looked up and gave Ash a smile. Is that a made the team smile or a I'm-glad-that-is-over-with smile? Ash worried as she gave her a very pale and forced grin in return. Trying to keep herself from shaking, she made her way back to the locker rooms to get changed out. Ash slowly sank onto a bench. She had never wanted anything more in her life and would be devastated if she didn't make it. Relax she told herself, there is nothing you can do now. Tryouts are over. What's done is done. You either made the team... or you didn't. There is absolutely nothing you can do about it now.

Ash knew it was true; unfortunately, that didn't help her much. In fact, it made her feel worse. Her one shot was over, now all she could do was wait. With a moan, she leaned over her knees, wishing the weeks until the teams were posted would go into fast-forward and dreading the date all at the same time.

Fred Weasley looked down across the Hogwarts ground, his eyes resting on the Quidditch Stadium. He walked calmly down towards it, going over in his head what he was going to do. He felt excited, and yet, not nervous at all. He supposed it was because it was not really a big deal. Sure, he'd love to be on the team, but it wasn't like the school would kill him if he failed miserably. Not that he had any intention of doing that.

He had decided to try out for the Beater position. He liked the idea of actually being allowed to hit big, hard ball at the other team. This idea especially appealed to him when the thought of a match against Slytherin came into his mind. He, like many Gryffindors, and other houses alike, wasn't particuarly fond of them.

He had now reached the Stadium, and looked around at the stands that surrounded it. It must be a great feeling to have all those people watching. Or even to be one of the people watching. He could imagine that the atmossphere here was immense. Even if he didn't make it onto the team, he knew he'd be just as excited to be here watching.

He walked onto the pitch and picked up a broomstick that was beside Madame Hooch, then he turned and walked towards the center of the pitch. He could feel a slight tug of nerves, but shook it off. There was no need for them.

When he reached the center of the pitch, he mounted his broom and kicked off. He flew up into the air, loving the rush that flying gave him. Just that take off was an amazing feeling. But then he came to a sudden halt as a sharp whistle blew.

He looked back down at the ground, and saw Madame Hooch indicating for him to come back down. Fred frowned unsurely. Surely that one take off hadn't been enough to decide whether he'd be on the team or not? He wasn't that bad at flying. Was he?

He leaned forward slightly and flew back down to the ground, dismounting his broom and walking unsurely over to Madame Hooch. She was holding something in her hand, and as he got closer he realised what it was. He breathed a sigh of relief that his try out wasn't over yet, but his cheeks turned red and he wore an embarrassed grin as he took the bat from Madame Hooch's hand.

"Yeah, thanks, I might be needing this..." He said as he turned and walked back to the broomstick that he had left in the middle of the pitch. Real clever way to begin, forget the bat. Imagine if she'd let the Bludger out before she'd noticed, he thought with an amused smile. He could just imagine himself, knocked out by a bludger on his first try out. That may ruin his chances of getting on the team.

So with bat in hand, he mounted the broom again and flew up once more. He swang the bat to get the feel of it, and nearly fell off his broom. Dammit. He grabbed the broomstick with both hands and righted himself, before switching hands. Might be easier if he held the bat in the right one. He looked down at Madme Hooch. He couldn't quite see her expression, but he doubted she would be impressed so far. He shook his head and laughed slightly to himself. Making a good impression so far...

He nodded at Madame Hooch, and she opened the case and let free a bludger. Fred watched it fly up into the sky and head straight for him. He waited until it got close, then swang his bat as hard as he could, whacking the bludger across the pitch. He speed after it, flying as fast as he could get the broom to go to get ahead of the bludger. He was only a few metres behind it when it turned sharply and came back at him.

Fred struggled to get his broom stick to go back a little bit. He felt sure it was going to hit him. Oh crap. He shut his eyes and swung the bat. He waited a second, then opened his eyes again. The bludger was gone. He'd hit it. He looked around for it, and once again found a problem. He had hit the bludger at Madame Hooch. The black ball sped towards her and Fred raced after it. He was sure he wouldn't be able to catch up with it, but he managed to get more speed from somewhere and managed to get ahead of the ball, before it got too close to the teacher. He swung his club and hit the Bludger, whacking it all the way across the pitch.

He felt relief wash over him, and then raced after the ball again, his new found speed never leaving him. He found, to his relief that the rest of the tryout went better than the start, and he spent the rest of the time knocking the Bludger back and forth across the pitch, aiming for imaginary players. His aim grew alot better now that he was trying to hit things, and he soon started to think that maybe his tryout wouldn't go done as the worst ever.

When Madame Hooch blew her whistle again, he hit the Bludger once more, this time down at the ground near to the box that held the balls, and flew after it, flying ahead of it before jumping off his broom as soon as his feet touched the ground and waiting for the bludger to follow, before jumping on top off it and pinning it to the ground, then he held it tightly and forced it back into it's case.

He stood up, panting, and looked over at Madame Hooch with a smile and a "done" nod, before picking up the broom stick and putting it back where he'd got it from, and then leaving for the locker rooms. He smiled to himself. He'd done all he could.

And now I wait.

It was a bright sunny day, one of those days that was perfect to play sports. Although Harry had never heard of the sport Qudditch before his friend Ron had filled him in telling him that it was one of the most popular and dangerous sports in the wizarding world.

But it had also been his knowledge and keen eye sight (even though he had glasses) that had made his decision to try out for seeker for the houses team. He had loved the flying on a broomstick feeling anyway and Qudditch was all on broomstick.

So that had made up his mind as he walked to wards the stadium on the grounds close to the Forbidden Forest yet a fair walk from the castle. But that was not the only reasons he had showed up for try-outs it was also that Hermione had pointed out that his father, James, had been the seeker for the team which Harry had never known and he felt very proud hoping he too could make the team.

He smiled as he thought about this when he entered the stadium. He looked around in awe at the many places where spectators would be sitting. He slowly spun in circles to take it all in. Then he noticed the three large hoops at the end of each of the field.

Looking to the others he saw most of them didn't take a second glance at the stadium. He tried to act professional and walked up to Madame Hooch how he had always thought look too much like a hawk. She began to shout orders to each of the players starting with the few seeker contestants.

He looked behind her to see a few old brooms. These were the same as the ones he had done his flying test on. He picked the one that was the most polished looking even though its tail was still bent and wood was coming off. It looked the best of the lot as he swung it over his shoulder. Then he looked over at Madame Hooch and the other seeker hopefuls.

In her hand was a small golden ball that was trying with a lot of might to get away. Its tiny wings were whizzing as fast as a humming birds and Harry was very interested. He wanted to touch it and hold it to see it try and escape from his hand. She told them they had to catch it and before he had a chance to ask to hold it she closed her hand and told then to get in a line. Harry was pushed into being first so Harry listened as she told him he would go first and to circle the pitch. When her whistle went off he was to look for the snitch.

He nodded before flying up to the top of the stadium. He wobbled a bit but enjoyed the feeling of the wind in his face. As he zoomed around the pitch once he heard the faint sound of a whistle and he began to scan the pitch for the golden ball smaller than his hand. He squinted his eyes as the team below watched.

Then his heart raced as the snitch was seen right beside the team and they didn't even notice. He raced to wards the team thinking he would pull up but he didn't the snitch raced behind the group as he kept flying to wards them. They dived out the way just as Harry flew over yelling his apologies. But he kept right on the snitches tail as he flew closer and closer.

Finally he stuck out his hand holding on to the broom with the other. He was now close to the ground so that his feet almost touched the grass. He could feel the tiny wings against his fingers until..."Ooof!" he shouted as he toppled off the broom and into the dirt. He landed some distance away from his broomstick which had flown forward but stopped noticing it lost him. Harry then looked up opening his hand a small bit to sport the little bird like ball in his hand.

"I got it!" he yelled waving his hand around, forgetting about the pain of the impact. He smiled widely as he looked at the snitch and it fluttered madly around in his fingers. He had done it!
