 Flying Lessons

Flying lessons are held here. First Years only. Please be VERY detailed. Two paragraphs at least for each question. You're passing grade will depend on how well you understand your character and their emotions, and the effort you put into it. Copy and paste from the box below, and erase the paranthesis. Answers should be in italics. Post them in this topic.

It was a clear, breezy day, and the grass rippled under the students' feet as they marched down the sloping lawns toward a smooth flat lawn on the opposite side of the grounds.

(What is your character feeling right about now? Are they nervous? Excited?)

Madam Hooch arrived soon after. A woman with short, gray hair, and yellow eyes like a hawk.

"Well, what are you waiting for?" she barked. "Everyone stand by a broomstick. Come on, hurry up."

The brooms were old and some of the twigs stuck out at odd angles.

"Stick out your right hand over your broom, and say 'Up!'"

(What happens when your character orders their broom into their hand? Does it leap into the air easily? Or does it simply lay on the ground?)

Madam Hooch then showed the students how to mount their brooms without sliding off the end, and walked up and down the rows correcting their grips.

"Now when I blow my whistle, you kick off from the ground, hard. Keep your brooms steady, rise a few feet, and then come straight ack down by leaning forward slightly. On my whistle- three- two- one."

(What happens when your character attempts to fly? Do they listen to directions? Soar into the air? Or do nothing? Do they land safely, or do they need to visit Madam Pomfrey in the Hospital Wing?)

It was a clear, breezy day, and the grass rippled under the students' feet as they marched down the sloping lawns toward a smooth flat lawn on the opposite side of the grounds.

Kyler impatiently follows the other students down to the brooms. Her heart is racing and her palms are a bit sweaty. She was nervous, she had never flown before. She didn't show she was nervous, she kept the blank face that she normally wore.

Kyler looked around at the other students, most of them were just as nervous as herself. She was used to not being afraid of anything, well mostly anything. Kyler was actually somewhat afraid of heights.

Taking a deep breath she listened intently to the teacher. Just because she was a rebel didn't mean she didn't listen when she needed too.

Kyler steps up to the broom and holds her sweaty palm out over the handle, "Up!". Having been a failure, the broom rolled slightly at her ankles, she wiped her palm on her robe and thrust her arm back over the brooms stick. "Up!" She said more determined and sharply. The broom rose and she quickly caught it, relief flooding threw her entire body as her skin met the wood. She smiled smugly but quickly went back to her blank mask.

Kyler looked at the teacher, somewhat hoping the teacher would be impressed. The teacher didn't acknowledge her whatsoever, something that made Kyler quite angry.

Glaring at the students the teacher talked to gave Kyler something to do while she tried to calm herself down. All her anger and nervous were causing her insides to go haywire.

Madam Hooch then showed the students how to mount their brooms without sliding off the end, and walked up and down the rows correcting their grips.

"Now when I blow my whistle, you kick off from the ground, hard. Keep your brooms steady, rise a few feet, and then come straight back down by leaning forward slightly. On my whistle- three- two- one."

Kyler listened intently, of course she acted as if she weren't listening. That would have totally ruined the image she was going for.

A sudden burst of bravery swept threw her and she pushed up off the ground much too early. Hovering three times as high as she was told to made her feel obnoxious, something she absolutely loved.

When she saw the rest of the kids kicking up she finally came down, the teacher gave her a dirty look. Kyler rejoiced at the look, she had been thriving for some sort of attention from the teacher.

Her heart was still racing in her chest and she couldn't help but smile at the feeling. Flying gave her the most adrenaline she had ever experience and she loved it.

It was a clear, breezy day, and the grass rippled under the students' feet as they marched down the sloping lawns toward a smooth flat lawn on the opposite side of the grounds.

As the Gryffindors trudged down the hill towards the Forbidden Forest they noticed the Slytherins had already arrived. In front of them was twenty real broomsticks. Harry was so excited when he saw them lying there. Would it work? Would it be like all those tv shows Dudley watched where the broom would just fly off?

Harry had heard Fred and George Weasley complain about the school brooms. Said they vibrate if you flew too high or always flew to the left. Down in the pit of his stomach was some nervousness but it was over come by excitement. Well this was what Harry had been looking forward to ever since Hagrid had come to fetch him from that leaky shack with the letter he had cherished.

Harry glanced down at his broom as Madame Hooch arrived. It was an old broom as the twins had said. Some twigs stuck out at odd angles and the wood was pealing away. He looked up as she shouted directions for how to start with your broom.

Harry stuck out his hand, feeling a bit silly, over his broom. Shouting "Up!" as loud as he could and waiting. He didn't have to wait too long as the broom shot up to his hand. "Woah!" he said trying hard to keep a hold of it. As Harry looked up some students brooms were barely moving although some had gotten it to reach their hand.

Trying hard to follow directions he flung his leg over the broom. Then he gripped the wood so hard he could swear he had a splinter. Harry wasn't afraid of flying but he was afraid of falling off and looking like a fool in front of the Slytherins. He looked up to see Madame Hooch correcting a few students, Neville especially.

Then finally the whistle sounded and Harry kicked with all his might. His head soared even though he was only a few feet above the ground. He felt like he was above the clouds. He knew that this was his passion. He wanted to fly! He wanted to just soar around on his broomsticks and fling things at Dudley from above. He snickered at this thought before slowly floating back to the ground.

It was a clear, breezy day, and the grass rippled under the students' feet as they marched down the sloping lawns toward a smooth flat lawn on the opposite side of the grounds.

Aurelia followed the other students with an air of coolness about her, she was feeling confident and excited about her first flying lesson, Sure she had messed about on an old broom her father kept in the house, but she wasn't allowed to do much upon it after she had fallen off when she was younger and broken an arm.

She was looking forward to soaring high above the ground, though she knew the teacher would most likely be restricting that for the moment. As the group neared, Aurelia clearly saw a score of broomsticks laying on the soft grass, and a smile crept across her face.

Aurelia walked over to one of the broomsticks, nearest to where she was standing, she looked distastefully at the state of the brooms, most were falling apart and battered. She would definitely have to ask her father for a broom, she wasn't going to carry on using these moth-eaten things if she planned on practicing to join the Quidditch team eventually.

Placing her right hand out above the handle of the broomstick, Aurelia said firmly and clearly "Up." A smirk crawled across her face, replacing her previous smile, as the broomstick flew upwards and she closed her hand around the wooden handle.

Aurelia listened to the instructions the instructor gave, not wanting another injury. Placing her legs either side of the broom and gripping onto the handle of the broom confidently, she was agitated as Madam Hooch came round and adjusted her placement of her grip.

Brushing that little set back off, she proceeded to forcefully kick off from the ground, she grasped tighter on the handle as the broom tilted backwards slightly and rose into the air. About 4 feet off the ground Aurelia was tempted to test her flying skills more by casting off into the sky, but knowing she would get into trouble she held herself back and leant forward, heading back down until her feet were firmly back on solid ground.

It was a clear, breezy day, and the grass rippled under the students' feet as they marched down the sloping lawns toward a smooth flat lawn on the opposite side of the grounds.

It was taking quite a bit of self control to keep herself from sprinting down to where the broomsticks laid in neat rows. Ash was so excited she could barely stand it. After hearing about broomstick and how they could actually fly, she had been dying to get on one. But after hearing that there was a sport called Quidditch that was played on broomstick in the air, Ash had almost decided to break into the broom storage shed just to try one out. Luckily she hadn't, but today she would get her chance to fly.

At home, sports were basically her life. No matter what time of the year it was, Ash was almost always playing something. But since she had come to Hogwarts, there hadn't been many opportunities to kick back and shoot some hoops. And even if there had been, Ash would have had a hard time of it. Hogwarts didn't have a basketball court! Ashley needed a sport desperately, and if flying proved to be fun, well, Quidditch might be able to fill that void.

Finally, Ash reached the area where flying lessons were to be held. Her hands itched as she stared at the broom next to her on the ground - she wanted to pick it up sooooo badly. But after exercising even more self control, she waited patiently until the teacher showed up.

"Up!" Ash stated enthusiastically - perhaps a bit too enthusiastically. All the excitement that had been building inside of her for the past few days exploded out in that one word, causing the broom to shoot up rather violently into her hand. She caught it though and a smile came to her face. Ash knew she would be nursing a bruise on that palm for days, but it was worth it.

She looked around, seeing how the rest of her classmates were doing. Not so well, as it turned out. A few like her had managed to get the broom into their hands, but most of them were still yelling sharp "Up!"s that were becoming more and more frustrated by the moment. Ash felt for them, she really did, but at the moment impatiences overrode any sort of other emotion that she was feeling. She wished they would all hurry up so she could actually try out her broom and see what it could do.

Ash didn't care when Madam Hooch examined her hand placement; in fact, very little mattered besides getting up in the air. She waited rather impatiently while the other student's grips were checked, anticipation rising by the moment.

The second the Professor said 'one', Ash pushed up sharply. She rocketed ten feet in the air, the wind pushing her hair back and whooshing past her face. It felt wonderful - the best feeling she had ever experienced. It just seemed natural to be up in the air, just as it seemed natural to be on the back of a horse. All Ash wanted was to stay up here forever, but the shouting of Madam Hooch brought her back to reality. After doing a quick turn - something she knew she wasn't supposed to do but just couldn't help herself - Ash landed safely back on the ground. Everything that had been said about flying was an understatement. Ash knew she would be counting the days until she got to fly again.

It was a clear, breezy day, and the grass rippled under the students' feet as they marched down the sloping lawns toward a smooth flat lawn on the opposite side of the grounds.

Fred followed the rest of the students, feeling both nervous and confident, if that's possible. He felt confident, because having older brothers who could both fly, he had before practiced on their brooms, and knew that he could, at least, get off the ground.

He did, however feel a little nervous, as he knew that these brooms were not exactly great quality, and he could just imagine crashing one of them or it just not working altogether. The part of him part was nervous was small though, and mostly, he was just excited.

Fred stood beside a broom and looked down at it as Madam Hooch told them what to do. These broom were a bit tattier than the ones they had at home. Although even those weren't perfect. They couldn't really afford to buy the latest or best brooms.

Fred held out his hand, hovering it over his broom and said, "UP," in a commanding voice. His broom jumped up to meet his hand and he clutched it tightly with a happy smile.

Fred put his leg over the broom, and listened to Madam Hooch's instructions. He kicked off, maybe a bit too eagerly and with a little too much force, because his broom didn't stop after a few feet. Or maybe that was because Fred couldn't help going just a little higher than told to. He liked being in the air. Restrictions just weren't fair.

Fred smiled and looked around, hovering in the air on his broom. Everyone else seemed to be doing ok too. He didn't want to go back down. He wanted to fly more. All the same he lent forwards slightly, though reluctant, and felt his feet touch the ground again.

It was a clear, breezy day, and the grass rippled under the students' feet as they marched down the sloping lawns toward a smooth flat lawn on the opposite side of the grounds.

Cho followed the other students down the lawns, her face straight. As soon as she passed over the hill there sat the broomsticks she was waiting to see. Her father had one at home but had forbidden her to bring it to school as it was her grandfathers and very special.

As she stepped up to the brooms she looked down at them with grimace. They were old and untreated unlike her grandfathers broom which her father had polished and kept in great care. The twigs stuck out at different directions and she wondered if she would get a splinter.

Cho watched as Madame Hooch showed herself. She watched their instructor as she had never seen a woman with eyes as a hawks. She tried not to keep eye contact with her as she looked at her feet as she barked orders.

Finally she told them to get their brooms to come to them. Easy enough, thought Cho as she looked at the broom beside her. She called up to her broom sticking out her but the broom just shook on the ground. She began to go red as she yelled at her broom. She was so embarrassed as the others held their brooms. But she finally screamed at it and it flew up to her hand still shaking slightly.

Cho looked very happy with herself but was surprised to hear Madame Hooch instructing them to fly. Now? She had just got her broom to come to her! She looked around but she seemed to be the only one who was surprised so she quickly jumped on the broom.

Once the whistle sounded the broom moved up wards. She got a bit frightened so that she slid off the broom falling to the ground. "Ooff," she said when she landed looking up at her broom still floating and Madame Hooch. "Sorry miss." She then got up and jumped on to the broom this time holding it tightly. Then she smiled. She was flying for the first time! How proud her father will be when she shows him at home, she thought.

It was a clear, breezy day, and the grass rippled under the students' feet as they marched down the sloping lawns toward a smooth flat lawn on the opposite side of the grounds.

Lowell had butterflies in his stomach since he awoke. He had missed out on all but two hours of sleep as he twisted and turned in the otherwise comfortable Hogwarts bed, tormenting himself with images of falling off of his broomstick. Today would be his first encounter with the fabled magical broom, and he didn't want to screw it up. Expect the worst while hoping for the best was his motto, and it definitely held true here.

The freckled boy ran a hand through his disheveled hair before stifling a yawn. He looked around to see that he wasn't the only one who had gotten little sleep last night. At least that made him feel a little better...there were others who were just as nervous.

Lowell rushed awkwardly to follow Madame Hooch's directions. She sure did seem impatient...but then again, he imagined she probably had to deal with a lot of incompetent wizards and witches every year, loads of students attempting something that had been second nature to her for years.

It was then that Lowell realized he had been staring at Madame Hooch, wondering how old she was, while she had apparently given them an instruction. Noticing that she stopped talking and the first few quick learners were already holding their brooms, he looked at the mundane-looking cleaning object curiously. "Up" came the cry of a nearby Slytherin, and as he watched, the girl smiled as the broom obeyed her whim. With vigor, and a bit of timidity, Lowell gulped and stretched a quivering hand over his broom.

"U-up" he hiccupped. The broom didn't so much as twitch. Lowell could feel his face flushing, but knew better than to look around to see if Madame Hooch was watching him. He cleared his throat after a second hiccup and readied himself to try again. A firm voice sounded to his left, and this time his glance revealed that a smug-looking Slytherin girl was clutching her broom. Lowell's brow furrowed, and after a third and fourth hiccup, he finally succeeded in bringing the broom to his hand. He hiccupped once more as he donned a triumphant smile, dropping the broom back to the soft grass. He quickly retrieved it the old-fashioned way, entirely forgetting what he was just doing. His cheeks reddened as he clutched the broom tightly in his hand, wondering how he could be so silly.

Madame Hooch scowled as she instructed Lowell for the fourth time how to correctly hold the broom. His embarrassment fed the hiccups, causing the Slytherin girl on his right to sneer maliciously at him. Despite the hiccups and the embarrassment, he eventually satisfied Madame Hooch's requirements. He frowned at the Slytherin girl as the instructor passed by, wondering how the prodigy aside him could be such a git.

At the whistle, Lowell gripped the broom even tighter, kicking off so hard he left furrows in the ground. As the broom shuddered a bit, Lowell leaned forward and regained control of the broom, the butterflies throwing a party in his belly. He knew he looked awkward as he prostrated himself on the broom that hovered eight feet off the ground. With a grimace, he leaned forward quickly, ready to land. And land he did, tumbling off of the broom as it planted directly into the ground. Lowell brushed the dirt off of himself as he jumped up quickly, retrieving the partially buried broom and delicately setting it on the ground beside him. He tried his best to look normal, but despite his damaged pride he still felt accomplished with what he had managed today.
